Planning Your First Jersey Shore Vacation

Everything first-timers need to know about visiting the Jersey Shore — when to go, what to expect, and how to make the most of your trip.

So you’re planning your first trip to the Jersey Shore? Welcome! Whether you’ve seen the beaches on Instagram or heard stories from friends who grew up coming here, you’re in for a treat. Here’s everything you need to know to plan an amazing first visit.

Understanding the Jersey Shore

First, let’s clear something up: “The Jersey Shore” isn’t one beach — it’s 130 miles of coastline with dozens of distinct towns, each with its own personality. From the glitz of Atlantic City to the quiet charm of Long Beach Island to the family fun of the Wildwoods, there’s a Jersey Shore for everyone.

For families, we’re partial to the Wildwoods (we’ve been here since 1970, after all). Here’s why:

  • Free beaches — No beach tags required
  • Wide beaches — Plenty of room to spread out
  • The boardwalk — 2 miles of rides, games, and food
  • Family-focused — The whole area is built around family fun

When to Visit

Peak Season (July - August)

  • Warmest weather (80s-90s)
  • Everything is open
  • Most crowded
  • Highest prices
  • Book way in advance

Shoulder Season (June & September)

  • Great weather (70s-80s)
  • Most attractions open
  • Smaller crowds
  • Better rates
  • Our personal favorite time

Off-Season (May & October)

  • Cooler but pleasant
  • Some attractions closed
  • Very quiet beaches
  • Best rates
  • Perfect for couples or those who like peace

Our recommendation for first-timers: Late June or early September. You get great weather without peak-season crowds.

How Long to Stay

For a first visit to the Wildwoods, we recommend 4-7 nights. Here’s why:

  • Day 1: Arrive, settle in, explore the beach
  • Day 2-3: Beach days, pool time, boardwalk evenings
  • Day 4: Day trip to Cape May or other area attractions
  • Day 5-6: More beach time, return to favorite boardwalk spots
  • Day 7: Relax before heading home

A long weekend works, but you’ll feel rushed. A full week lets you truly unwind.

What to Expect

The Beaches

Jersey Shore beaches are different from tropical beaches:

  • Water is cooler (but refreshing!)
  • Waves can be strong — great for boogie boarding
  • Sand is fine and clean
  • Lifeguards are on duty at main beaches

The Weather

  • Summer days are hot and humid
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common (they pass quickly)
  • Evenings cool down nicely
  • The ocean breeze helps

The Vibe

The Jersey Shore is casual, friendly, and unpretentious. You’ll see:

  • Families everywhere
  • People in swimsuits and cover-ups pretty much everywhere
  • Flip flops as formal wear
  • Everyone saying “down the shore” instead of “to the beach”

Getting Here

By Car

Most visitors drive. From major cities:

  • Philadelphia: 1.5 hours
  • New York City: 2.5-3 hours
  • Baltimore/DC: 3-4 hours

Parking is free in North Wildwood and at most motels.

By Air

Fly into Philadelphia (PHL) or Atlantic City (ACY), then rent a car.

What to Pack

We have a full packing list, but essentials include:

  • Sunscreen (lots of it)
  • Beach towels and chairs
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the boardwalk
  • Cash for boardwalk vendors
  • Layers for cool evenings

Budgeting Your Trip

Here’s a rough idea for a family of four:

ItemEstimated Cost
Lodging (6 nights)$900-1,500
Food$400-700
Boardwalk/Activities$200-400
Gas$50-100
Total$1,550-2,700

Money-saving tips:

  • Book an efficiency with a kitchen
  • Make breakfast and lunch in
  • Look for Morey’s Piers combo deals
  • Visit during shoulder season

First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Not bringing enough sunscreen — The beach sun is strong
  2. Only planning one day — You’ll wish you stayed longer
  3. Skipping the boardwalk at night — It’s a completely different experience
  4. Not bringing cash — Many boardwalk vendors are cash-only
  5. Overpacking activities — Leave time to just… beach
