Don't let a little rain ruin your vacation. Here are the best indoor activities and attractions to enjoy when the weather doesn't cooperate.
It happens to everyone — you’re on vacation and wake up to gray skies and rain. But here’s the secret: some of our best vacation memories happen on rainy days. Here’s how to make the most of an indoor day in Wildwood.
Boardwalk Arcades
Rain doesn’t close the boardwalk arcades! In fact, they’re actually more fun when it’s raining — fewer crowds and more games available.
Top arcades to visit:
- Mariner’s Arcade — Classic games and modern favorites
- Wild Wheels Raceway — Indoor go-karts (yes, indoors!)
- Sports Com — Sports-themed games and prizes
Pro tip: Bring cash and set a budget. It’s easy to get carried away with the tokens!
Movie Time
Sometimes the best rainy day activity is the simplest. The Wildwood area has movie theaters showing the latest releases:
- Harbor Square Theatre — Stone Harbor
- Rio Stadium 12 — Cape May Court House
Or stay in! Our efficiency suites are perfect for a cozy movie day. Grab snacks from the store, pile onto the couch, and enjoy some family time.
Indoor Water Parks & Pools
Can’t swim in the ocean? Head indoors:
- Splash Zone at Morey’s Piers has covered areas
- Many area hotels have indoor pools
- Our heated pool at The American Inn is great even in light rain (and it’s heated!)
Shopping
Rainy days are perfect for retail therapy:
In Wildwood:
- Boardwalk shops and souvenir stores
- Rio Grande outlet stores (10 minutes)
Nearby:
- Stone Harbor boutiques (20 minutes)
- Cape May shopping district (15 minutes)
- Tanger Outlets in Atlantic City (45 minutes)
Museums & Attractions
Doo Wop Experience Museum
Learn about Wildwood’s unique mid-century architecture and neon sign history. This small but fascinating museum is perfect for a rainy hour.
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum
Located at the Cape May Airport, this museum features restored aircraft and exhibits about the area’s WWII history. Great for families with kids interested in planes.
Cape May County Zoo
Technically outdoors, but many exhibits are covered. Plus, animals are often more active on cooler, overcast days. And it’s FREE!
Hereford Inlet Lighthouse
The lighthouse itself and gardens are lovely, and there’s a small museum inside. Quick and interesting.
Bowling
Good old-fashioned bowling is always a hit:
- Shore Lanes — Rio Grande (10 minutes)
Nothing fancy, but fun for all ages and a great way to pass a rainy afternoon.
Indoor Mini Golf
Monster Mini Golf in the area offers glow-in-the-dark indoor mini golf — actually more fun than outdoor courses for many kids!
Stay In & Enjoy
Sometimes the best rainy day plan is no plan at all:
- Cook a meal in your efficiency kitchen
- Play board games (we have some at the front desk!)
- Read a book on the covered deck
- Take a nap — it’s vacation, after all
- Plan tomorrow — research restaurants and activities
Rainy Day Packing List
Be prepared with these items:
- Card games or board games
- Books or e-readers
- Tablets loaded with movies
- Headphones
- Light rain jacket (for walking to dinner)
